Writing A Business Plan For A Home Business

Are you writing a business plan for you home business? Do you really need one?

Why writing a business plan for a home business?

A home business like any other needs a road map to a new destination. If you do not use one, you will end up lost before you get to your destination.

Every business no matter how small it is, must a have a business plan. You may not need a "formal" business plan document but you definitely need a "business plan" for you home business.

A formal business plan is a very long detail document with about 80-100 pages. A home business may not need this kind of elaborate plan, but writing a business plan is not an option. It is critical for your business.

Writing a business plan for your home business plan is just your "strategic planning." You want to cover at least four major elements:

a) Your home business description and elements
b) Your marketing plan
c) Your financial plan
d) Your operations plan

A. Your home business description and elements:

This element covers what kind of business you are doing. What is your home business of choice? At the very minimum, you need to have the following:

Why: What is your main purpose of having home business? If it is just money, you may want to reconsider. Any business has to be driven by some sort of desire besides the financial rewards. This desire will give you the self-motivation that you need to do it; otherwise, you are setting yourself up to fail.
What: What is your home business? What is your product or service? What is your focus?
When: When do you plan to do it? Do you plan to work every day for 2-3 hours or 10 hours a day? Did you notice I said every day?
Where: The location is probably your home, but where in your home. Do you have a designated space for it? Can you have everything you need available in this space?
How: how you are going to execute? Is your business a one-person show? Do you need an assistant or a particular tool? Who is involved in your business?

B.  Your home business-marketing plan:

When writing a business plan, marketing is crucial. At the beginning, you can do many things. In addition, there are many that you do not know and you are not familiar with, however, at the very least, plan what you know.

Do you need a website?
How do you plan to get clients? Do you need word of mouth referrals? Do you need friend's referrals or other local business referrals?
What is your market? Who is your target audience? Age, gender, and location, are important elements.
What are you customer needs? What problem are you trying to solve for them?
Who is your competition? How can you be better than they can?

I offer you a whole segment in home business marketing. I recommend you check the article guideline. Read some of the titles as it may help you trigger some ideas.

C.  Your financial plan:

Although there are many home businesses that do not need a lot of money to start up, you do need some capital to start and some to maintain.

Do you know how much that is? Can you afford to start a business? Are you banking in your business to produce and maintain itself right away? If the latter is the case, you may want to reconsider. It will be a shame to put many hours of work and count in income you are not sure is going to come.

D.  Your operations plan:

This is your initial description on you plan of action

List your priorities
List your short-term items and have a dateline
List your long term items and have a dateline
List your daily actions
Schedule your daily actions and your priorities

Although many home businesses have started with nothing in place, most have fail for not having something in place from the start. Writing a business plan does not guarantee success but it does guarantee you clarity in what you want to do and how to accomplish it.

Critical First Steps in Any Home Based or Work at Home Business

Maybe you are sick of your job.  Maybe you think you are worth more and want to make more money.  Maybe you are a single parent and need more income and more flexibility.  Or simply, there are no jobs being offered in your area.  There are many reasons why people are looking at home based business and work at home business opportunities.

The critical first steps in this article are to get you thinking so that whatever you choose to do will offer you the best opportunity for success and happiness.
  • Assess your strengths, skills and most importantly, any certifications and qualifications that you can apply outside the job.  For example I was a notary public for my old job.  A very minor duty for my old job.  I started looking at what I could apply that to outside of my job.  I became a notary signing agent.    My work as a notary signing agent led me to another income opportunity in field services and so on.
  • Research, Research and Research!  The internet is amazing place to get the “dirt” on any job opportunities and the companies offering the opportunities.  People love to blog and see their opinions in writing.  Do a search and you can find many different opinions.  Alternatively, you can join groups and group forums.  You can read through the issues brought to the forum and get an idea of what the work entails.  Many of these forums also have listings of good and bad companies to work for.  Some groups also have job postings.
  • Assess you finances.  No matter what is advertised, quadruple whatever you think the time commitment for start up will be.  A minimum of one to two months is realistic depending on the opportunity.  Unless you are already extremely experienced in the field, there will be learning time involved.  Triple this time for the business to get started making money.  Three to six months is realistic to earn back whatever your investment was and make a profit.  We all want instant results but a painfully realistic view will help prevent you giving up in frustration.  Many companies advertise instant success and wealth which may be true for some but for the majority it takes time!
  • Discuss your business opportunity with your family and loved ones, in particular how they could be impacted by your decision.  Whether you are married or single, with or without children you will need and count on their support and encouragement.  Do not underestimate the importance of this support.
  • You will work harder at this than at any job.  Don’t believe the ads.  Any legitimate opportunity will take a lot of hard work.  A real home based or work at home job will not be a get rich quick kind of job.  It will take real commitment and lots of hard work.

All of these critical first steps are based on common sense.  Yet so many blogs are from people who did not have a realistic view of what was required to start a home based or work at home business and gave up in frustration or believed all the “hype” and ended up investing more than they planned on.

Single Mothers - Can You Break Out of Your Dead End Job?

Our lives are a constant juggling act between work, home, children and occasionally ourselves.  We rush to pack the children off to school then, we rush to get to work on time.  After work we rush to pick them up from day care in time to avoid late pick up fees.  We rush to get dinner on the table, get homework done and get the children in bed.  Finally, we rush to get ourselves to bed so we can lie awake worrying about everything.

We have a tendency to find jobs that have definite start and end times in order to accommodate our lives.  Jobs that can meet our rigid time demands rarely have future growth opportunities.  Many job opportunities with future growth potential require a time investment after work hours or on the weekends when day care companies are closed.  I have found myself in a series of these types of jobs since becoming a single mother.

One day the construction company I worked for closed.  I had no job and no job prospects.  I could not find a job in my area because construction companies were closing daily.  Fear and guilt gripped me.  I did not have the luxury to wallow in these feelings.  I had bills to pay

My son was very happy to have me at home.  He wanted me to help with the soccer team, join the PTA and be a chaperone on field trips like other kids’ moms.

What could I possibly do at home to earn enough income?  I found myself surfing the web late at night.  There must be other people in my situation.  They must have found a way to make money.

I was a notary public for my old job.  What can I do to make real money notarizing documents?  I took an online course and became a Notary Signing Agent.  Notaries meet with people who are purchasing or refinancing their homes and have them complete the paperwork and notarize documents.

Homes were being foreclosed on at an alarming rate.  I joined an internet group and forum for Notary Signing Agents.  I started emailing other notaries to find out what they were doing to supplement their income since few were refinancing their homes.  I got several good leads.

There are emerging businesses from the housing crash such as home staging, property preservation, collateral inspections and home inspections.  This was a start.  I joined an online group forum for field inspectors and answered a posting for a job.

The bills are paid.  It is time to go back to the internet and find additional opportunities preferably work at home opportunities now that the bills are paid.

I hope this article will help single mothers who are considering the income potential and the time flexibility of being self employed in a home based business or work at home business.  Take a risk, believe and trust in yourself and you will find opportunities.

Why Single Moms Can Successfully Be Their Own Boss and Work From Home

The single most challenging hurdle for single moms to overcome to become successful working from home is their fear and guilt.

Single moms can and do feel guilty about many things from not having a father for their children, their children could have a better life if there was a second income, the amount of time spent working away from their children to provide an income, to… are they a good enough mother.

Do not get me wrong, I have never regretted having my son.  But, when it is late at night and I am exhausted and I still can’t sleep, it is easy to let my guilt overwhelm me.  It was just such a night that I thought, wouldn’t it be great not to have to go to work.  If I could only work at home then I could help with the soccer team, join the PTA and be a chaperone on field trips like other moms.

Then, I realized I have no idea how to start working from home.  What could I possibly do at home to earn enough income?  How can I submit my son to such an insecure future?  How can I tell him he may have make do with less for a while so mom can work at home?  What if it doesn’t work out?  How can I explain an absence from work on my resume?

Then one day, the company I worked for closed.  I had no job and no job prospects.  I remembered what my boss once said to me.  He said if he had his preference all his employees would be single mothers.  I asked him why.  He said single mothers are dependable, they can multi task and they want to please their bosses.

I thought about it a while and admitted he did have a point.  After further reflection I thought all the skills required to be a single mom are also required to work from home.
  • First we are always figuring out who has the cheapest deals and where we can get the most for our money (research).
  • Our children provide all the motivation we need to keep working.
  • Our lives are a constant juggling act between work, home, children and occasionally ourselves (multi tasking).
  • We have to be organized to make it through the day (organizational skills and the ability to prioritize).
  • We are constantly talking with our friends to see if they have a better way of doing things (networking).
  • Patience

Ok, I have the skills needed, now what could I possibly do at home to make enough income?

This requires a good deal of self reflection.  I recommend first examining what you like to do and what you are good at.  For example, if you love to surf the web, consider blogging and data entry.  There are many opportunities and you will want to spend time researching them.

If there are Yahoo Groups or internet forums for the work you are interested in, join them.  I am still doing work for leads I got from groups I joined four years ago.

Timing is important.  The company I worked for closed at the beginning of the year.  I was able to budget my income tax refund to supplement my unemployment until I started making money.  Alternatively, you can start part-time while still employed.

Try multiple jobs.  In other words don’t put all your eggs in one basket.  Drop the jobs that are not successful and build up the ones that are.  I started off doing four different jobs.  Since then I have dropped two jobs and added one new job.

Don’t be too proud to accept help and support from the ones you love.  This can be anything from financial assistance, if necessary, to emotional support.  Friends invited my son and me to dinner at least once a week until I got on my feet.

Sit your children down and carefully explain what it is you are trying to do and what impact it could have on their lives.  My son told me he would rather spend more time with me than have more toys.  I cried.

Be patient.  You may have to invest two to three months before you start seeing results.

Don’t be afraid to fail.  So what if it that particular job opportunity didn’t work out, we aren’t perfect.  Try something else.

And lastly, believe and trust in yourself.  You already have the skills you need to be successful.
